The Jerusalem gate at the entrance to the medieval city of Budingen is an excellent example of blending artistry with defense functionality. Budingen became a city in 1321 and shortly thereafter the defensive walls were constructed. This gate dates from 1503 and is a completely preserved example of red sandstone technology.
