| Perhaps the single most photographed street in all of Germany, it has come to represent the typical medieval village. In the center is Siebers Tower, the southern entrance to town in the 13th century, before additional expansion of the town walls. To the right is the inner-most portal of Kobolzeller Gate which still is a passage at the edge of town. |

Rothenburg's extreme popularity has done little to publicize its true value. Aside from the quaint cafes and trinket shops, Rothenburg is a treasure of walls, towers and great city gates that provides a glimpse into genuine conditions in the Middle Ages. At left is Hospital Bastion located at the southern-most point of the city. The access included seven gates, a portcullis and drawbridge and was the most heavily fortified entrance. In spite of such massive defenses the city was conquered several times. |

| The foot entrance to the Hospitaler Gate. Next to this entrance is the larger access to the bridge for carriages and mounted visitors. | At the rear of the Hospitaler Gate is this semi circular wall section with access to defensive positions. Note arrow loops in the wall, most likely for assaulting an enemy that succeeded in progressing beyond the gate. |
The Kobolzeller Gate from the area between the
first and second portals. This entrance too is a series of protected
gates. |
