This is one of the better states in
terms of abundance of sites as well as the pleasant and even extraordinary
landscapes within which the castles are located. Rhineland-Palatinate
is the premier river state in Germany. Within the state are 
both the Rhein river and the
Mosel. The Rhein of course is the prime industrial waterway in
Europe and the busiest castle tour area in Germany. The Mosel
doesn't have the abundance of castles but it has plenty to keep
you happy. It is also the wine center of Germany. If having many
castles within easy reach, plenty of transportation, and the addition
of many other activities at your disposal are critical to your
trip, this is the region to go and stay.
The castles to positively see here are Marksburg at Braubach on the Rhein, Cochem on the Mosel, and Eltz, a very short drive just off the Mosel . All three are exceptional castles with all tourist amenities in easy reach. In all there are more than enough castles in this area to see several every day while availing yourself to some of the world's finest wines.
