Situated northeast of Nurnberg at Neuhaus. It sits on a finger of land that is steep on all sides. Owned in its earlier history by the Bishops of Bamberg it was then called Neuhaus castle. It was renamed around 13 23 when it became the episcopal seat. In 1410 the castle came into the hands of the Count von Egloffstein, either as a distress sale or as security. In 1476 Bishop Philipp had the castle strengthened and expanded. Another outer compound was added in 1505 by Bishop Georg III. In 1635 the castle was attacked by General Wahl and he had virtually all the residents, including women and children killed. In 1708 A large outer round tower where the powder was stored exploded and destroyed the palas which has since been in ruins. |
